As Malaysia’s most urbanised state, Selangor continues to shape residential design trends. In areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, homeowners are renovating with a clear goal: to create modern sanctuaries that feel calm, efficient and refined amidst city living.
The renovation trends shared below are especially relevant for Selangor homeowners renovating terrace houses, condominiums and modern landed homes.
Seamless Expansion with Large-Format Tiles
In Selangor’s terrace houses and condominiums, space efficiency is critical. One of the strongest renovation trends is the use of large-format tiles to visually expand interiors.
Why large-format tiles work in urban homes
- Fewer grout lines
- Cleaner, uninterrupted surfaces
- A more spacious, high-end appearance
Tiles sized 600 × 1200 mm and above are commonly used in living rooms, dining areas and master bedrooms to create a seamless floor plane.
Vogue Grande by Niro Granite, a large-format porcelain slab series, is often chosen for this application. Its expansive proportions help create a continuous surface that visually opens up compact urban spaces.
Tile Drenching for a Unified, Hotel-Like Look
A rising trend in Selangor renovations is tile drenching, using the same tile design across both floors and walls.
This approach is popular in:
- Bathrooms
- Powder rooms
- Kitchens
By minimising visual breaks, tile drenching creates a cohesive, hotel-inspired atmosphere, especially suitable for condominiums and modern landed homes.
Designers often maintain interest by pairing different finishes of the same tile tone, allowing texture variation without disrupting the overall colour palette. The Gravity series by Niro Granite, inspired by natural fossil formations, offers a full range of surface finishes, making it an ideal choice.
From Industrial Grey to Warm Urban Neutrals
The industrial grey aesthetic that once dominated Selangor interiors is gradually being replaced by warmer neutral tones.
Current colour direction
- Beige
- Cream
- Greige
- Soft stone shades
These colours soften interiors and pair naturally with:
- Smart lighting systems
- Indoor greenery
- Contemporary furniture
For homeowners seeking a refined, stone-inspired look, Gravity Series by Niro Granite offers premium surfaces that emulate natural stone with a modern architectural feel, making it suitable for living spaces, feature walls and statement areas.
Safety-First Wet Kitchens and Balconies
In Selangor, wet kitchens and balconies are actively used spaces. With frequent rain and water exposure, safety is no longer optional.
Tiles used in these areas must offer:
- Slip resistance
- Easy maintenance
- Long-term durability
Tiles with Slip Stop® surface technology are increasingly specified for:
- Wet kitchens
- Bathrooms
- Balconies and utility zones
They remain smooth for daily cleaning while providing additional grip when wet, an essential feature for Selangor’s climate and urban lifestyle.
Japandi and Biophilic Accents for Urban Calm
Urban homeowners are increasingly drawn to biophilic design, using natural textures to soften modern interiors.
The Japandi style remains popular in Selangor, blending minimalist layouts with warm, organic materials. Wood-look porcelain tiles, such as Eco-Foresta by Niro Granite, are commonly used in:
- Bedrooms
- Study areas
- Living rooms
They offer the warmth of timber while remaining water-resistant, termite-proof and low-maintenance, making them suitable for Malaysian homes.
